Do Crystals Really Heal? The Science Behind Crystal Healing
Do Crystals Really Heal? The Science Behind Crystal Healing
For many years, I worked as a crystal healer and teacher within the New Age community. I genuinely believed in what I taught, and crystals became an important part of my life.
Over time, though, I began asking more questions. What does science actually tell us about crystals? Where did some of the beliefs surrounding them come from? And if we take away the claims of healing energies and special powers, does that make these extraordinary pieces of our planet any less meaningful?
For me, the answer to that last question turned out to be no.
My relationship with crystals has changed enormously, but my fascination with them hasn’t. If anything, learning more about what they really are, how they form and the incredible stories they carry has made me appreciate them even more.
So in this article, I’d like to explore what we actually know about crystal healing, what the evidence tells us, and why I believe crystals can still have a meaningful place in our lives without needing to claim that they can heal us.

What Crystal Healers Claim
Crystal healing is generally based on the idea that crystals can interact with the body’s energy or subtle energy field. Different stones are believed to carry different properties, and practices may involve placing crystals on particular areas of the body, carrying or wearing them, or using them during meditation.
Depending on the tradition or practitioner, crystals may be said to:
- Restore energetic balance
- Clear or unblock energy
- Influence emotions or wellbeing
- Support physical or emotional healing
Some explanations also borrow language from science. You may hear references to vibrations, frequencies, electrical charges or resonance, which can make the proposed mechanisms sound scientific.
Crystals do, of course, have genuine physical properties. Some interact with electricity, light, heat, pressure and magnetic fields in measurable ways.
The important question is whether those real properties provide evidence that crystals can interact with or heal the human body in the ways claimed.
That’s where we need to look more closely at the science.
⸻
What Does the Science Actually Tell Us?
Crystals certainly have real and sometimes remarkable physical properties.
Quartz, for example, is piezoelectric. When mechanical pressure is applied to it, electrical charge can develop across the crystal. This property has practical applications in technology and has helped make quartz useful in electronic devices, sensors and timekeeping.

But there’s an important distinction here.
A crystal having a measurable physical property does not automatically mean that the same property can influence or heal the human body simply by holding, wearing or placing the crystal nearby. For that claim to be supported scientifically, we would need reliable evidence showing that the effect occurs in people under controlled conditions.
So far, that evidence hasn’t been demonstrated for crystal healing.
One frequently mentioned experiment compared people’s experiences when holding real crystals with their experiences when holding imitation crystals. Participants reported sensations with both, particularly when they had been told what they might expect to feel.
That’s interesting, because it suggests that expectation and suggestion can play an important role in the experiences people have with crystals.
This doesn’t mean those experiences aren’t real to the person having them. Our expectations, surroundings, emotions and attention can genuinely influence how we feel. That’s part of the reason the placebo effect itself is such an interesting area of scientific research.
What it doesn’t demonstrate is that an energy emitted by the crystal caused the experience.
None of this means you can’t enjoy holding a crystal during meditation, keep one nearby because it helps you feel calm, or attach personal meaning to a particular stone.
It simply means we should distinguish between something that helps us personally and something that has been scientifically demonstrated to treat a medical condition.
And crystals should never be used as a substitute for appropriate medical care.

How Did These Beliefs Begin?
Humans have been fascinated by beautiful and unusual stones for thousands of years — long before anyone understood how crystals formed.
Across different cultures, gemstones became associated with protection, status, religion, medicine, luck and symbolism. People naturally tried to explain the world around them using the knowledge and beliefs available at the time, and unusual stones were often given meanings of their own.
Some of those traditions are genuinely ancient. Others that are often presented as ancient today are surprisingly modern.

Modern crystal healing has drawn ideas from many different places, combining older gemstone folklore with concepts from alternative spirituality and the New Age movement. Ideas about crystals corresponding with chakras, carrying particular energetic frequencies or being able to clear blocked energy have become especially widespread over recent decades.
Over time, these different traditions and newer ideas have become so intertwined that it can sometimes be difficult to tell where an ancient belief ends and a modern interpretation begins.
And that’s something we find fascinating.
Understanding where a belief came from doesn’t mean we have to ridicule it or erase the history surrounding it. Folklore and human beliefs are part of the story of crystals too.
But a belief having a long history isn’t the same as having scientific evidence behind it.
We can appreciate the stories our ancestors attached to stones while also recognising that our understanding of geology, chemistry and the human body has moved on.
⸻
If It’s a Placebo, Does That Mean It’s Imaginary?
The word placebo is sometimes used as though it means “fake” or “all in your head”, but that’s not really what it means.
Our expectations can influence how we experience things. A familiar object can make us feel reassured. A ritual can encourage us to slow down. Taking a few quiet minutes to hold a crystal and focus on our breathing may help us relax — not because the stone is transmitting a healing energy, but because of what we are doing in that moment.
Crystals can also become meaningful personal objects.
A stone given to us by someone we love might bring comfort. One bought during an important time in our lives can remind us of how far we’ve come. Choosing a crystal to represent an intention may simply help keep that intention in our thoughts.
Those experiences don’t need to be dismissed simply because we can’t attribute them to an energy within the stone.
In fact, we think there’s something rather lovely about recognising that the meaning doesn’t have to come from the crystal — it can come from us.

A Personal Reflection on Why Crystals Still Matter to Me
My love for crystals comes from something simpler and more tangible than healing claims.
Long before plants, animals or humans existed, the mineral world was already here. Minerals form the foundation of the Earth itself — from the rocks beneath our feet to many of the materials that eventually become soil. They are quite literally part of the foundation upon which life developed.
And then there is their age.
Many minerals preserve evidence of geological processes that happened millions, sometimes billions, of years ago. Heat, pressure, water, volcanic activity and the movement of tectonic plates have all played their part in creating and transforming the mineral world we see today.
In that sense, rocks and minerals can be quiet witnesses to Earth’s history.

For me, crystals don’t store energy or memories in a literal sense. But they do carry context.
Their geological history is awe-inspiring. A single specimen can tell us something about an ancient ocean, a volcanic eruption, a mountain-building event or conditions deep beneath the Earth’s surface.
When I hold a crystal now, that’s what fascinates me.
I’m holding a tiny piece of a story that began long before I existed and will continue long after I’m gone.
That gives me a sense of connection to something much older and much larger than myself — not mystically, but materially, geologically and beautifully.

Celebrating Crystals at The Crystal Tree
Changing what we believe about crystals hasn’t changed how much Louise and I love them.
If anything, it’s opened up an entirely new world for us.
We’re increasingly fascinated by geology — how minerals form, why they grow in particular shapes, where their colours come from and what they can tell us about the history of our planet. We’re still learning too, and that’s become one of the things we enjoy most.
It has also changed the way we talk about crystals in the shop.
We know that some people who walk through our door love crystals for their geology. Others collect them, decorate their homes with them, wear them as jewellery or simply choose a stone because they think it’s beautiful. And some still connect with crystals spiritually.
All of those people are welcome.
Our role isn’t to tell anyone what they should believe. It’s to share what we know honestly, distinguish evidence from tradition or belief, and encourage people to remain curious.
Because whatever path brought you to crystals, there is an extraordinary natural world waiting to be discovered.

Frequently Asked Questions About Crystal Healing
Can crystal healing be harmful?
The greatest concern is using crystal healing in place of appropriate medical or psychological care. Crystals can be enjoyed alongside everyday life, but they shouldn’t be relied upon to diagnose, treat or cure illness.
Some mineral specimens also require particular care when handling, so it’s always worth learning about the material you own.
How should I choose a crystal?
There is no “correct” way to choose one. You might be attracted by its colour, geology, shape, texture, rarity or simply because you love the way it looks.
You don’t need a list of metaphysical properties to give yourself permission to choose a crystal.
If you’re drawn to one, that’s reason enough.
Do crystals have scientifically proven healing effects?
There is currently no reliable scientific evidence that crystals emit healing energies or can treat medical conditions simply by being worn, held or placed around the body.
That doesn’t mean someone’s experience of comfort, focus or relaxation isn’t genuine. The experience may be real without the proposed metaphysical explanation being scientifically demonstrated.
Can I still use crystals for meditation or intention setting?
Of course. A crystal can be a physical focus for meditation, reflection or a personal intention in much the same way that other meaningful objects can.
You might hold one while taking a few quiet minutes for yourself, choose a stone to represent something you want to remember, or simply keep one somewhere you’ll see it.
The important distinction for us is between giving something personal meaning and claiming that the stone itself has a scientifically proven power.

A Final Thought
So, do crystals really heal?
Based on the scientific evidence we have today, there is no reliable evidence that crystals possess healing energies or can treat physical or psychological conditions.
But perhaps that doesn’t have to be the end of the story.
A crystal can still make us stop and look. It can remind us of a person, a place or a moment in our lives. It can encourage curiosity about the planet beneath our feet. And sometimes simply holding something beautiful that formed millions of years before we arrived can put our own lives into a rather different perspective.
My beliefs about crystals have changed considerably over the years.
My sense of wonder hasn’t.

Very interesting Tracy. I love crystals and find them helpful for journeying while I meditate, especially when I am using one of my crystal skulls. (Several of which came from you Tracy!) Without my skulls I would never have written the book COSMIC CRYSTALS! WORKING WITH NEW CRYSTAL SKULLS (published by Ozark Mountain Publishing).
Thank you so much for your comment. I have started reading your wonderful book, but not quite finished it yet. I got a lot of clarity from reading your Holy Ice book.
I do still work with my crystal skulls, but in a more personal, Soul centred way. One day I may get round to re-writing my crystal skull workshop so that I can teach again 😁
I absolutely loved reading this. I have loved crystals as a child, their colours, textures and just how fun they were to collect. Many people have said to me ‘its all a load of rubbish, and they are just stones’ but they are so much more than that, and as you have explained, it is what they mean and represent to you as a person. Whether you believe them to have powers, hold magic, or just look lovely, then you believe what you want them to! Really interesting to read that you no longer a crystal healer/teacher too, thank you for sharing. I am excited to visit your shop in Ross. My daughter loves them too, so we will visit you soon!
Thank you so much for taking time out to comment on our post, it really does mean the world to us… especially when it resonates with you too. We look forward to meeting you if you do get to visit x
