What is Preseli Bluestone?

The name Preseli Bluestone is commonly used for rocks originating from the Preseli area of Pembrokeshire, Wales. Among the best known is spotted dolerite, an igneous rock containing distinctive pale mineral spots.

And this is where its story becomes particularly interesting.

Stonehenge contains a group of smaller stones collectively known as the bluestones. Geological research has linked several of these rock types to sources in west Wales, including outcrops in and around the Preseli Hills.

That means some of the stones at Stonehenge were transported from Wales to Salisbury Plain — a journey of more than 100 miles — thousands of years ago.

Exactly how and why prehistoric people moved them such an extraordinary distance remains part of the continuing story of Stonehenge.

A Small Piece of Welsh Geology

Despite the name, Preseli Bluestone isn’t necessarily bright blue.

Freshly broken or wet surfaces can show blue-grey and greenish tones, while polished pieces reveal variations in colour, mineral grains and natural markings that may be much harder to see on an unworked rock.

This heart has been polished to bring those details to the surface while retaining the character of the original stone.
