Moss Agate

Moss Agate

Moss Agate is a variety of chalcedony, part of the quartz family. Despite its name, it does not contain moss or other plant material. Its distinctive moss-like patterns are created by natural mineral inclusions. Because it lacks the characteristic banding of true agate, Moss Agate isn’t technically an agate in strict geological terms, although the name has long been used commercially.

These inclusions can resemble moss, foliage and other organic forms, with no two pieces looking quite the same. Their remarkable resemblance to miniature landscapes and plant life is a large part of Moss Agate’s appeal.

Many people are drawn to Moss Agate for its earthy colours and organic patterns. It can be appreciated as a decorative stone, used in jewellery, or placed alongside plants simply because it complements natural textures and environments. Any sense of calm, reflection or connection that arises comes from personal association rather than from the stone itself.
