This substantial Pyrite Heart is far more than a simple polished carving. Across its metallic surface are numerous natural cavities containing visible Pyrite crystal formations, including the wonderfully geometric cubic crystals for which this mineral is famous.

The main body has been polished to reveal Pyrite’s distinctive brassy metallic lustre, while areas of the natural crystalline structure remain exposed. Look into the little openings across the heart and you’ll find tiny angular crystals catching the light — creating a fascinating contrast between the smooth polished surface and the naturally crystallised areas.

Weighing an impressive 750g and measuring approximately 10cm tall × 9.5cm wide × 3.7cm deep, this is a substantial display specimen as well as a beautifully carved heart.

Why is Pyrite Called Fool’s Gold?

Pyrite is an iron sulphide mineral (FeS₂), instantly recognisable for its metallic lustre and pale brass-yellow colour.

That golden appearance has famously led to confusion with real gold, earning Pyrite its nickname “Fool’s Gold.” But the two are actually very different.

Gold is a native metal that is relatively soft and malleable. Pyrite is a compound of iron and sulphur and is considerably harder and more brittle.

Pyrite also has something that makes it particularly fascinating to mineral collectors: its extraordinary natural crystal forms.

Those Little Cubes are Natural!

Pyrite belongs to the cubic crystal system and is famous for producing remarkably geometric crystals. Some specimens form cubes so precise that they can look almost manufactured — but those straight edges and sharp angles are created entirely by natural crystal growth.

This heart gives you the opportunity to see some of that crystal structure for yourself.

Rather than polishing away every irregularity, the carving retains numerous natural crystal-lined cavities. Within them you can see small geometric Pyrite crystals, including cubic formations, surrounded by the smoother polished material.

It’s one of the most interesting features of this particular piece and means there’s something new to discover as you turn it in the light.

More Than Fool’s Gold

The name Pyrite comes from the Greek word pyr, meaning fire.

Strike Pyrite against steel and it can produce sparks — a property recognised and used by humans for thousands of years.

Pyrite occurs in many different geological environments and can be found alongside a wide range of other minerals. Between its metallic appearance, remarkable crystal geometry and fascinating history, it has plenty going for it without needing to be mistaken for gold!

Caring for Your Pyrite Heart

Pyrite needs slightly different care from many other polished stones because prolonged exposure to moisture and humidity can encourage oxidation over time.

Keep your Pyrite dry and avoid soaking it in water, chemical cleaners or using an ultrasonic cleaner. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and display it somewhere reasonably dry.

Pyrite measures around 6–6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, but it is brittle and the exposed crystals can be damaged if knocked or dropped, so handle this substantial piece with care.
