Warring States Agate Geode Pair

This beautiful Warring States Agate Geode Pair comes from a single small agate nodule that has been cut in half, revealing the wonderful structure hidden inside.

Around the outer edge you can see intricate layers and tiny circular patterns of agate, while the centre opens into a natural cavity lined with sparkling druzy crystals. Because these are two halves of the same original nodule, the patterns continue across both pieces — a lovely little glimpse into how the agate developed.

Why is it called Warring States Agate?

The name has an interesting connection with Chinese history.

Agate was highly valued in ancient China, and particularly elaborate agate beads and ornaments are known from the Warring States period (475–221 BCE). The modern material sold as Warring States Agate takes its trade name from its distinctive patterns and resemblance to agates associated with this period.

This specimen itself is modern natural agate from China, rather than an ancient artefact.

A Little Geology

Agate is a variety of chalcedony — microscopic crystalline quartz (SiO₂). It commonly develops when silica-rich fluids enter cavities within rock and gradually deposit successive layers of chalcedony.

That’s particularly easy to appreciate in this pair.

Look closely around the edges and you’ll see repeated bands, rounded formations and intricate patterns. Towards the centre, the cavity remained partly open, allowing visible quartz crystals to develop and create the sparkling druzy interior.

Cutting the nodule into two halves lets you see a cross-section through that entire process.
