Description

Natural Gobi Desert Agate

This small but fascinating Gobi Desert Agate is a completely natural specimen, with warm translucent orange chalcedony contrasting beautifully with pale cream circular and orbicular formations.

Look closely and there is a surprising amount happening across its surface. Several concentric “eyes” are visible, alongside smaller radial patterns and naturally weathered textures.

Gobi Desert Agates are varieties of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of Quartz composed primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Their unusual sculptural surfaces are the result of their geological formation combined with long periods of natural erosion and weathering in the desert environment.

The circular structures are particularly fascinating. They are features within the chalcedony itself that have subsequently been exposed and accentuated as the surrounding material weathered away. Research into these unusual Gobi agates suggests their precise geological history can be complex and is not yet completely understood.

This specimen has been left completely natural — it has not been carved or polished.
