Description

Lapis Lazuli Heart

This Lapis Lazuli Heart is a beautifully polished piece displaying the rich blue colouring, golden pyrite and natural variations that make Lapis Lazuli so recognisable.

Weighing 71g and measuring approximately 5cm across, it has been polished into a smooth heart while retaining plenty of the character of the natural material.

Look closely and you’ll see tiny golden pyrite inclusions scattered through the blue — one of the features that can make good Lapis look almost like a miniature night sky.

You will receive the exact Lapis Lazuli Heart shown in the photographs.

What is Lapis Lazuli?

Here’s something I think is worth including because many customers won’t know it:

Lapis Lazuli isn’t actually a single mineral — it’s a rock.

It is a metamorphic rock composed predominantly of the blue mineral lazurite, usually accompanied by other minerals including calcite and pyrite.

The combination is what creates its characteristic appearance: lazurite provides much of that wonderful blue, calcite can appear as white or pale areas, while pyrite produces the little metallic golden flecks.

Lapis Lazuli has also been valued for thousands of years, both as an ornamental stone and historically as a source of blue pigment. Ground Lapis was used to produce natural ultramarine, once one of the most prized and expensive pigments available.

So this little 5cm heart carries rather more geological and human history than its size might suggest.

Displaying & Caring for Lapis Lazuli

This heart is a lovely size for displaying with a mineral collection, keeping on a desk or shelf, or simply picking up and enjoying as a tactile polished stone.

Lapis Lazuli is softer and more porous than quartz, so avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners and prolonged soaking. Simply wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth when required.
