Why is Rose Quartz Pink?

Rose Quartz is the familiar pink variety of quartz, but the reason for its colour is rather more interesting than simply saying it contains a particular impurity.

Research has shown that the colour in much Rose Quartz is associated with extremely fine microscopic inclusions related to a pink fibrous mineral, rather than straightforward amounts of manganese or titanium dissolved into the quartz as older explanations sometimes suggested.

These microscopic features scatter light through the material and contribute to the characteristic soft, cloudy appearance of Rose Quartz.

Colour can range from the palest blush pink to much stronger shades. This particular carving was chosen for its unusually rich colour saturation, which becomes especially impressive across such a large piece.

A Serious Piece of Quartz

Rose Quartz is composed primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and belongs to the quartz family.

It measures 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, making quartz relatively durable, although a carving of this size and weight obviously needs rather more careful handling than a tumble stone!

Large pieces of good-coloured Rose Quartz require a sizeable piece of suitable rough material before carving even begins. Areas containing unsuitable fractures, inclusions or poor colour have to be worked around by the carver, making a finished heart of this scale an impressive object in its own right.

Caring for Your Rose Quartz Heart

Rose Quartz is relatively durable, but an 8.7kg polished carving needs a secure, stable display position.

Keep it somewhere the stand cannot easily be knocked and avoid abrasive or chemical cleaners. Dust with a soft cloth when required.

Prolonged exposure to strong direct sunlight is also best avoided, as the colour of some Rose Quartz can fade with extended exposure.
