Moss Agate Heart

These Moss Agate Hearts are wonderful examples of why this stone has such an appropriate name. Against translucent to milky chalcedony, green mineral inclusions form branching, mossy patterns that can resemble foliage, tiny forests or miniature landscapes captured inside the stone.

We have four individual hearts available, ranging from flatter 5cm pieces to substantial, chunky 6cm hearts. Each has its own completely different pattern, and you can select the exact heart you would like to receive from the dropdown menu.

What is Moss Agate?

Despite its name, Moss Agate doesn’t contain moss — and technically, it often isn’t a true agate either.

Moss Agate is a variety of chalcedony, the microcrystalline form of quartz. The beautiful moss-like appearance is created by mineral inclusions growing within the chalcedony rather than by fossilised or trapped plant material.

And here’s another little geological wrinkle: although we call it agate, Moss Agate often lacks the distinctive banding normally used to define agate. The name has simply become well established over time.

The result is a stone where every piece can look completely different — from delicate green tendrils suspended in almost clear chalcedony to dense areas that resemble miniature woodland.

Care

Moss Agate is relatively durable at around 6.5–7 on the Mohs hardness scale, but polished pieces can still be scratched or chipped.

Simply wipe with a soft cloth when required and avoid harsh chemical cleaners, sudden temperature changes or ultrasonic cleaning.
